Great Lakes Wargaming Coalition Army Lists...this is a work in progress at the moment. All units are organized under the GLWC rules system in which one miniature figure represents 20 actual soldiers (1 to 20 scale). Most of our organizational information is 30+ years old and we realize there is a lot of information that has come to light in the past decade that could allow us to reorganize some of our units or even reorganize whole armies, ...but frankly we're too set in our ways to change much since rebasing figures isn't our favorite past time.
Infantry... The group has chosen to model 2 battalions of each Austrian infantry Regiment. Grenadier Battalions are made up of two Grenadier companies from each Infantry Regiment as it was the Austrian custom to amalgamate their Grenadiers into an Army Reserve since they did not have traditional Guard units. The Kurassiers (heavy horse) were also customarily part of the Army Reserve. Regular Line Infantry battalions, Grenzers, and Landwehr are normally 6 companies (stands) of 8 figures per stand for 48 figures total. Grenzer companies are further divided into two sections (stands) of 4 figures and Landwehr can be a mixture of 4 figure stands and 8 figure stands but each battalion will normally total 48 figures. Occasionally there could be 36 figure Landwehr battalions. Austrian Cavalry squadrons were fairly standardized during this period so all squadrons are 6 figures. Light cavalry are allowed to skirmish so their squadrons are represented by 2 stands of 3 figures each. Heavy cavalry do not operate in skirmish so each stand contains all 6 figures (represents 120 actual troopers). The group has chosen to model British Infantry units as 10 stands (companies) of 3 figures each in a single rank since the British infantry operated historically in a two rank deep formation. A command stand with the Battalion standard is also common but not required. Infantry... We have chosen to organize the Baden infantry in the same organization as the French 6 company battalions. Infantry... Our French Line Infantry battalions vary in size depending on the year being recreated. After 1808 they can be 6 companies, or in the early years 8/9 companies. Their early organization had battalions of 8/9 companies of 75 to 100 soldiers which we take as 4 figures on one stand one rank deep since many of the early French line battalions were able to skirmish. Later in the period (order of February 1808) French line battalions reorganized into six companies. Our representation of the later organization is 4 six figure "center company" infantry stands (2 ranks of model figures deep because the French battalion organization was three rank deep), 1 Grenadier (Stand) of 6 figures in 2 ranks, and 2 three figure stands (1 rank deep) representing the light company (that is allowed to skirmish under CLS and the variation used by GLWC). French Infantry Regiments can have 2 to 6 battalions depending on the time period being fought. All French Legere (light infantry) can skirmish. The 6 company battalions are represented by 12 stands of 3 figures each 1 rank deep. The earlier 4 figure stands making up 8 or 9 company Legere battalions are also allowed to skirmish. Each French Line or Legere Regiment normally has a 3 figure command stand that carries the Regimental standard. French Guard battalions are either 32 or 40 figure units divided into 4 companies. A regimental half company command stand is standard under our rules. Infantry... Our group decided to organize the Russians closer to paper strength as part of the split with the original Vietmeyer group. We also wanted to make the Russians a bit more unwieldy due to their nature so made their organization a bit more complicated. The infantry battalions are all broken down into 4 companies as appears historical. The battalion command stand has 11 figures in three ranks. There are two 8 figure stands in 2 ranks and 1 grenadier stand of 4 figures in two ranks and 2 light stands of 2 figures each that are allowed to skirmish. A Russian unit is not as flexible on the table as most other nationalities of the period. The rules also restrict their ability to move and fire.
