Members of the 10th Mountain landing near the compound of the "person of interest" in a recent exercise at Little War HOSTILE FIRE CONTACT REPORT by patrol on 2 July 2010 An unknown/unidentified group has detonated a VBIED (car bomb) at check point 17-1 near the UN Headquarters. The bomb killed three (3) Bosnian Muslims and two (2) British UN aid workers one (1) German Soldier, also wounding 3 Panzer Grenadiers and a UNHCR representatives. The bomb was remote detonated. Video footage of the incident indicates the driver and passenger did not detonate the explosives and may not have known the bomb was in their car. HOSTILE ACTION REPORT by local unidentified source, dated 29 June 2010 An unknown group may be planning to assassinate the Mayor of Jablanica. (VBIED's seem to be the weapon of choice). A second VBIED may be used in the area of the initial explosion to target anyone trying to rescue victims. This is from a reasonably reliable source. UNLAWFUL ACTION REPORT by UNHCR rep. John Gonzalez, dated 28 June 2010 Another group of women from Kosovo, who
were being transported through the Jablanica area on their way from central
Bosnia, was freed after the truck they were riding in broke down near a
checkpoint. A UNHCR representative heard one of the women crying and
forced the military police at the checkpoint to open the truck to examine the
cargo. All of the women were ethnic Serbs from Kosovo. The women
were not able to reveal any helpful information about their captors but
paperwork found on the driver of the truck indicated some connections with the
ministry of refugees in Mostar.
Here is an example of
the player teams available for this exercise/game. Each line represents a
specific entity with specific objectives and restrictions they must achieve and
follow as dictated by the ROE for the game. All players are provided a
background synopsis, written objectives, lists of forces available, and a list
of allies and enemies so they can formulate their plans for the exercise/game.
Each team/player adds another level of complication but a game can be
successfully played with as few as 4 teams/individuals and as many as 9
teams/individuals.
This picture is of
the HVT's residence but it also illustrates the difficult terrain the members of
the 10th Mountain must navigate to complete their mission. The upper left
junction point of the white and black hexes, where they meet the game board, is
the reference point on the map below 372/241, thus the game board is directly
tied to the map below. NORTH
This map has been modified from the original NIMA map to duplicate the miniature being used to represent Jablanica. The area modified is primarily contained within the Red Lined grid.
The picture above indicates the level of detail available in the scenario/game recently completed during the Little Wars Convention in Chicago. Notice the group of dogs belonging to the HVT contained within his compound for security purposes and to help provide an early warning should unfamiliar individuals be present in the warlords neighborhood. The upcoming simulations will involve field maintenance and recovery equipment, hazardous material transportation, and refugee issues. The following Handbooks and training guides will be useful for participants. Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) #05-24 Forward Operating Base, #03-34 Route Clearance, #B/2-395 FA (TS) "Bandits", #04-16 Cordon & Search. Additional resources will be posted as exercise date nears. Primary source: FM 4-01.45 Tactical Convoy Ops.
