Friendly Forces Page Current Operations: Spring/Summer of 2008 Detachments of the German 15th Panzer Grenadier Regiment are operating in the Jablanica AOR and will be responsible for security in the Ploce, Mostar, Jablanica corridor until September 2008. This unit has assumed responsibility for general security, refugee security, and road security within the AOR. There are also British Special Forces units operating in the same area. NATO tasks for current deployment: 1. Maintain control of the PLOCE / JABLANICA corridor. 2. Maintain headquarters in Jablanica with control of the surrounding area using minimum force. ROE: Return fire when fired upon by forces hostile to coalition and/or refugees. 3. Provide protection, food, water, and medical attention for the refugees at the airfield in Jablanica. 4. Evacuate all sick and wounded to medical facilities at PLOCE and aboard ship. 5. Evacuate all remaining refugees to the refugee camps being built at PLOCE. 6. Apprehend those designated as War Criminals by the UN and World Court.
Recently Special Operations Forces have introduced the "Gun Truck", a version of the HUMMER with some teeth. Note the MK-1 .50 Cal. within protection on top and the open doors, all of which are fully armed with the operators positioned very aggressively. This recent development has changed the way SOF operators conduct mounted sweeps in hostile territory. Note the tire and extended bumper on the front to allow aggressive pushing if necessary, as well as the pintle mounted 240G/SAW in the driver side rear. There is usually another 240G, SAW or a MK-19 riding shotgun along with a heavily armed operator in the right rear door. All-in-all a patrol of four of these beauties can make a usually aggressive insurgency pay closer attention to what is coming down the road sweeping for IEDs or looking for HVTs. Standing Orders EFFECTIVE 1. You will provide security for the UNHCR facilities, and NATO convoys traveling highway 17 & 16-2, and the air facilities in Jablanica. You will provide a platoon sized ready reaction force capable of action within 10K of the town within one half hour. 2. Be ready to provide protection, food, water, and medical attention for any future refugees entering Jablanica. 3. Apprehend any designated War Criminals or known terrorists. ROE: Return fire only when fired upon. The 4th Brigade of the10th Mountain Division remains in country, and may be used to reinforce the area if necessary. The link below will provide information of the units contained within the 4th Brigade.
EQUIPMENT link below will provide information on some of the vehicles and equipment to be used during this simulation...
New Refugee Camp under construction in Jablanica, Bosnia, by Regular Army & National Guard engineering and civil affairs detachments. Heavy Military and Civilian engineering units are also constantly working on the infrastructure in the Jablanica area.
HOSTILE FIRE
CONTACT REPORT by patrol on 15
May 2008
An unknown/unidentified group has
detonated a VBIED (car bomb) at check point 17-1 near the UN Headquarters. The bomb
killed three (3) Bosnian Muslims and two (2) British UN aid workers one (1)
German Soldier, also wounding 3 Panzer Grenadiers and a UNHCR representatives. The bomb was remote detonated. Video
footage of the incident indicates the driver and passenger did not detonate the
explosives and may not have known the bomb was in their car.
HOSTILE ACTION
REPORT by local unidentified source,
dated 17 May 2008 An unknown group may be planning
to assassinate the Mayor of Jablanica. (VBIED's seem to be the weapon of
choice). A second VBIED may be used in the area of the initial
explosion to target anyone trying to rescue victims. This is from
a reasonably reliable source.
UNLAWFUL
ACTION
REPORT
by UNHCR rep. John Gonzalez,
dated 28 April 2008 Another group of women from Kosovo, who
were being transported through the Jablanica area on their way from central
Bosnia, was freed after the truck they were riding in broke down near a
checkpoint. A UNHCR representative heard one of the women crying and
forced the military police at the checkpoint to open the truck to examine the
cargo. All of the women were ethnic Serbs from Kosovo. The women
were not able to reveal any helpful information about their captors but
paperwork found on the driver of the truck indicated some connections with the
ministry of refugees in Mostar. NORTH This map has been modified from the original NIMA map to duplicate the miniature being used to represent Jablanica. The area modified is primarily contained within the Red Lined grid.
The picture above indicates the front of a column of tanks beginning to enter the center of the town of Jablanica in a simulation reproducing an attempt by the Yugoslavian Army to take over the city and its vital link between Sarajevo and the coast. Note the 2 M-84 tanks in the lower left of the picture. The upcoming simulations will involve field maintenance and recovery equipment, hazardous material transportation, and refugee issues.
