NAVAL ACTIONS The Map below illustrates the main theater of operation for the Naval portion of our Afrika Campaign. It is borrowed from Paul Collier's Osprey Essential History "The Second World War (4)" which covers the Mediterranean Theater. The RED lines illustrate the main Axis convoy routes from Italy to the North African Ports primarily equipped to handle the flow of equipment and supplies for the Axis forces during the period of our campaign. Tobruk would later be added to the destination list. Convoys will be designated by the first letter of the originating port, "N" for Naples, etc. and a number in sequence.
The map clearly illustrates the importance of Malta.
Convoy Notification: An Italian convoy of 15 ships (7 transports and 8 escorts) is departing for Benghazi. Escorts include 4 Destroyers, 2 Light Cruisers and 1 Heavy Cruiser (all Italian). Also 4 Italian Subs have been stationed along the route patrolling for potential Allied surface interception. Malta is being attacked daily by Axis air units more for harassment than any attempt to destroy the garrison. Code T-1 Allied units in the Med are limited. There are two standard Destroyer Sqdns operating independently in the Crete area available to intercept. Malta now has the following aircraft for defense and offensive operations. 6 Wellington and 8 Blenheim bombers. 29 new Spitfires, 20 refirbished Hurricanes, 18 Gladiators, and 6 Beaufighters.
