Wargame Scenic Materials

This page will provide links to various places and materials that will be helpful in detailing your wargame table, bases, and dioramas in 1/285 - 1/300 Scale.  There are several excellent suppliers of scenic items in our scale but you may also find items in "Z" scale useful.

Many everyday items in "Z" scale will work because the things needed; trees, fences, etc., come in so many sizes in real life the difference between the scales isn't as noticeable.  GHQ's individually sculpted figures are also closer, in many cases, to this scale than they are to the scale of the equipment GHQ manufacturers.  Take a look at the size of crew figures compared to "individual" infantry and support weapons castings.  It was a durability question that becomes obvious when you compare GHQ with CinC infantry and GHQ crew with the two.  The GHQ infantry are larger so they will take the stress of gaming.  You will find the GHQ individual infantry/support are compatible with this "Z" scale set from Preiser:

Note the figures in peaked caps and what appears to be "dress" uniforms about a quarter of the way from the upper left in this illustration from the Walthers web site.  This unpainted set runs around $30.

Suppliers...

Wm Walthers: http://www.walthers.com/  This company provides access to a large number of suppliers in many scales.  They are the largest source of "Z" scale material in the US. This link above takes you to their main page.

To find a specific product on the Walthers search link look in the upper left corner of their home page.  You will find a black rectangle with "advanced search" in the search line.  Follow the link to the advance search page.  Useful categories for the search are "Figures" and "Scenery" in "Z" Scale, ...which is closest to 1/285th scale.

The item below is made by Faller Gmbh as Park Accessories providing scenic detailing items  unavailable from any other source.  It is Walthers Part# 272-282791.

TimeCast Models:  http://www.timecastmodels.co.uk/  TimeCast make a wonderful selection of scale buildings, walls, trees, hedges, fences, lights, haystacks, and stacked bundled corn stalks.  All of which can be very useful in our scale for detailing our gaming tables.

You can see examples of their products in the picture below including an excellent modern service (gas) station, streetlights, more of their buildings, trees, and ground cover.

Woodland Scenics: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/index.cfm  This link takes you to their home page.  To search for terrain materials follow the "Products" link right below the company logo.

Evergreen Scale Models: http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/  This company provides a wealth of plastic shapes and sheets for the scratch builder and detailer.  Follow the Quick Index to find your needs.  Remember 1mm is very close to a foot in our scale.

Noch:  http://www.noch.de/en/partner/kato.php  Noch makes the road tape that is so very useful in our scale.  Some of the roads you see in the picture below are made from Noch materials as well as hand detailed.

Scenic EXPRESS:                                                                              http://www.sceneryexpress.com/products.asp?dept=1032  This company provides an assortment of "grass mats", "foliage material", flowers, and interesting blends to add interest and color to your dioramas, bases, and gaming space.  Granted the material is shown in a larger setting but it works in ours as well.

D&B (formally LEVA of Canada) Now available through The Winged Hussar

A fine assortment of buildings and small terrain pieces covering WW2 to modern.  The picture below illustrates some of their products used in making this refinery miniature.  The tanker trucks were purchased from Walthers.  Some of the buildings are GHQ.

The 1/300 scale Railroad track in these pictures is from Heroics & Ros http://www.heroicsandros.co.uk/ and while it may be expensive it is closer in scale and easier to work with than the other products I've tried.  They offer curved, straight, and switches.
