Modern Aircraft and Equipment

by various manufacturers, all assembled, painted, and photographed by members of COC staff

A Viet Nam era aircraft.  The F-8 Crusader flew for both the Navy and Marines during the conflict.  Scribing lines into the base plastic sheeting to simulate the type of temporary matting used at bases like Chu Lai RVN as well as using a portion of a modern revetment produced by Leva of Canada to simulate the type of revetment used to protect aircraft while they were between missions.  1/300 Scale aircraft kit is by Nichimo.

Photo of a Viet Nam era C-7 Transport in 1/300 scale.  Model was scratch built by ComOpsCtr staff.  This aircraft was capable of STOL operations and was critical to supplying both the Army and Marines during its years of service.

Most will recognize the aircraft below.  It is the ageless B-52 Bomber in Vietnam era colors.  It is still in use today.

Most will also recognize the aircraft below.  The C-17 so often seen where it is needed in any part of the world.

The C-17's above and below are sister aircraft used during ComOpsCtr  Battalion/Brigade CPX's with the Army for advanced troop deployment and logistical operations as part of worldwide deployment exercises.  0064 was the first model completed followed by 0060 noted below.  Note the slight detail changes as the modeler got more information and practice on the large 1/300 model.

The helicopter below is also easily recognizable due to its extensive use in movies and our military special operations units.  The small diorama is useful during insurgent operation simulations when continuous operation of air resources is necessary.  Small FOB's provide logistical support which can tie in with other unit responsibilities during an exercise.

Urban operations supported by a Blackhawk by GHQ in 1/285th scale.

CH-47 also by GHQ in 1/285th scale.

A pair of Osprey's operating over the gaming table during a recent simulation for the Marines in the Balkan theater of operation.  Basic model by GHQ in 1/285th scale.

The large CH-53E pictured below continues to provide the heavy lift capability for the USMC, which it will continue to do the foreseeable future.  Model also by GHQ in 1/285th scale with modification of the rotor assembly by COC modelers.
